From the tree of hope

That fall in Arnhem
more than the falling leaves
reached the ground ….
Thousands of beings unaware
disappeared for good
And above the Dutch sky
hope did not flare up

They did not hear
Did he speak too quietly?
They did not see
Did ambition obscured the truth?
Bridges a step away from freedom
Turned uncrossable

Market Garden in Driel
Sounded different
Welcoming band no longer played
Crying drowned out dreams

The Polish Independent Parachute Brigade
was gone
with no right to say the last word
with no right to say good bye

After the Rhine ran red with blood
They opened the last chute
There was nowhere to land

This fall in Arnhem
may more than the falling leaves
reach the ground …
May our commemoration assign a meaning
to lost lives

Let us sweep the leaves in Driel
May nothing obscure the ground
which will forever
remember our heroes
