Tijdens operatie Market Garden werden op 21 september 1944 bij Driel ongeveer 1000 Poolse parachutisten van de 1ste Poolse Onafhankelijke Parachutisten brigade onder leiding van generaal Sosabowski afgeworpen. Hoewel slechts een klein deel van de Poolse brigade de Britten daadwerkelijk kon ondersteunen, was hun aanwezigheid van levens belang.
\nUiteindelijk konden door de komst van de Poolse parachutisten bij Driel de restanten van de ingesloten Britse troepen uit Oosterbeek worden ge\u00ebvacueerd.
