AS A PARACHUTIST\u2026
\n(Fragment from the Battle of Arnhem)<\/p>\n

Mortar projectiles
\nAgitated like wasps \u2013
\nPricked with the stings of death.
\nAfter each salvo
\nLifeless sheaves of uniforms
\nLaid on the ground\u2026
\nLined with the red of blood.<\/p>\n

The setting sun, blushing
\nWith shame \u2013 hid itself \u2013
\nBy boughs of ruptured trees.
\nAs \u2013 the entire day was stained
\nWith the purper of blood\u2026<\/p>\n

In the trench of two Poles
\nA burly \u201cRed Devil\u201d*
\nFound hospitality.
\nHe took cover from \u2013 yet another
\nOf countless German attacks,
\nSince he used to hand out \u2013
\nApples to his starving soldier brothers,
\nThe Dutch kind, picked at night,
\nIn the garden \u2013 adjoining the woods.<\/p>\n

Over the shelter of the two Poles
\nThe air howled with a bang,
\nAs if \u2013 infernal courtyards
\nOpened their infernos,
\nWith the chuckle of a thousand devils.
\nAnd \u2013 a while later followed
\nThis \u2013 short, uncertain silence,
\nBroken by a dolorous cry.
\nWe hastened there with Frank,
\nTo explore the situation on site \u2013
\nThe \u201cRed Devil\u201d, his beret
\nSlid down over his eyes,
\nGrimaced painfully \u2013
\nAnd \u2013 slightly opened his lips,
\nAs if he wanted to whisper something\u2026
\nBut, the words did not reach further
\nThan his wounded \u2013 chest.
\nChoking on blood \u2013
\nHe passed away under our hands\u2026<\/p>\n
