Poem<\/span>
\nALLEGIANCE
\nTo all parachutists, perished or alive<\/p>\n

The years cannot be dispelled. Incense has sunk from the altar,
\nBut the memory subsists \u2013 a lone breakwater of the past,
\nFlowers may wither, and briny tears dry out on the face,
\nA parachute does not wilt and fade that easily.<\/p>\n

Every soldier is entitled to wounds and to fame,
\nPoets enfold the alliance of the sword and the bread,
\nBut only a parachutist standing trial united
\nA lump of earth with the promised heaven.<\/p>\n

We do not want to blame fate for that bitter disappointment,
\nThat we could not return like birds can after hibernating *1) \u2013
\nOur paths separated, and the echo of the shortest road
\nSubsided: you who fought would be the first to return.<\/p>\n

A quarter-century. Although this history dreads luster
\nThe pilgrimage beckons the recollection as every year,
\nIn Arnhem, a child\u2019s hand adorns the graves again,
\nThe flowers flow from that small hand like grace.<\/p>\n

As a new September joins the past,
\nAs the motherly lament and agony fade away \u2013
\nWe always call together our brigade,
\nBy the banner from Warsaw, before which we kneel.<\/p>\n
