Tuijnman<\/span><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3069\" src=\"https:\/\/www.driel-polen.nl\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Fotos-toespraken-2012-Tuijnman.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"175\" height=\"250\" \/>The poem entitled \u201cEnding and Beginning\u201d by Wis\u0142awa Szymborska, the Polish poet who won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1996, starts off with the words:<br \/>\nAfter every war<br \/>\nsomebody has to clean up.<br \/>\nIn other words, in the end<br \/>\nthings will not get cleaned themselves up.<\/p>\n<p>She recounts, in a beautiful and very depictive manner how people set about doing so. And then she continues:<br \/>\nHowever, all around me<br \/>\nthere are soon people popping up<br \/>\nwho start getting annoyed by this.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, someone will<br \/>\ndig up a bunch of<br \/>\ncorroded arguments<br \/>\nand bring them to the trash.<\/p>\n<p>Those who know<br \/>\nwhy it should go there<br \/>\nshould retreat from those<br \/>\nwho know very little.<br \/>\nAnd those who know less than little.<br \/>\nAnd, last but not least, from those who know as good as nothing.<\/p>\n<p>If we did not have any commemoration, if we did not reflect on those dark days in September 1994 every year here on the Polenplein, if we did not reflect on General Sosabowski and his men from the 1st Polish Independent Parachutist Brigade, then that history would fade from our memory.<br \/>\nWe will not retreat from those who know little.<br \/>\nNor from those who know less than little.<br \/>\nOr, last but not least, from those who know as good as nothing.<\/p>\n<p>However, in 2012 \u2013 68 years later \u2013 that history is still clearly imprinted on the minds of the residents of this village of Driel.<br \/>\nFull of warmth, they commemorate their Polish men, who gave their lives for our freedom.<br \/>\nThe children are told the story time and again.<br \/>\nNot like a bad dream but to make it clear to them that freedom, as we know it in our country, is not something to be taken for granted.<br \/>\nTo learn to take partial responsibility, even as young people, for working on our democracy.<br \/>\nTo pass on this message later on, to bridge the past with the future.<br \/>\nRealising that everyone has the right to freedom and safety, the right to food and education, the right to freedom of ideas.<\/p>\n<p>That is why our community can never forget the 1st Polish Independent Parachutist Brigade.<\/p>\n<p>We will not retreat from those who know little.<br \/>\nNor from those who know less than little.<br \/>\nOr, last but not least, from those who know as good as nothing.<\/p>\n<p>That is why we are grateful once again this year to reflect on the contribution made by the Polish and to commemorate those who died.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Mayoress of Overbetuwe: Mrs. E.
